Hi Andre,

Great points to watch for. Being a recruiter myself perhaps I can offer an alternative perspective.

Forst starters, many companies I've dealt with compare recruiters by rates which in my opinion is a potentially fatal mistake. Vertical and industry is crucial because being a Digital Services and Interactive Media Recruitment Specialist, I can tell you no one knows Flash or Web better than we do.

Think about it, there's a reason why most of the digital agencies around town deal with us. The ability to continuous provide solid qualified candidates is a value no rate reduction can offset.

ALWAYS ASK WHERE THE CANDIDATES ARE FROM
Many generalist recruitment agencies who'd cut rates tend to post in job boards to find candidates. Although it may work for SOME trivial jobs, but as the position demands more technical experience and specific qualities, the more unqualified they usually are. Think of it this way, if you were going to post on job boards, why not do it yourself! If you're willing to spend for a recruiter, then make sure they are not cheating you .

GIVE FEEDBACK
As good as a recruiter can be,there will always be times that a candidate you do not want. Tell the recruiter why so they would know what to avoid or what to keep in mind. It's a short conversation that will ultimately help you find a more suitable candidate for your role!

Hope this helps!

It never hurts to ask and in many cases a head hunter would be more than happy to take a 5% cut instead of losing the entire deal. You just need to make sure you negotiate your rate ahead of time as it is bad form to bring it up after you have a potential candidate ready to go.

Great post. I was just shocked myself this past week dealing with some recruiters while staffing up at work and one of the recruiters charges 30%

That is just crazy! I wouldn't hire just because of that cost. I never considered negotiating a better rate however, thanks for the idea!
